Press Release -- September 02, 2005
TRAFFIC ALERT - Upcoming Lane Restrictions At Indian River Inlet Bridge

Indian River Inlet -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) alerts motorists that State Route 1 northbound and southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction beginning on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, and continuing through May 2006, for a multi-phase project in preparation for the construction of the new Indian River Inlet Bridge.

The traffic restriction will begin one mile north of the Inlet and extend one mile south of the Inlet. Work will include the construction of new access roads in addition to widening the road. Each phase of this project will necessitate a slightly different driving pattern, so motorists are encouraged to be aware of traffic signage.

Bicycle lanes will remain open throughout the first phase of this project. With the start of the second phase, on or about October 17, 2005, the bicycle lanes will close until the start of the 2006 tourist season.

During May 2006 the normal two northbound and two southbound lanes are scheduled to be reopened to both vehicular and bicycle traffic and will remain open for the duration of the construction of the new bridge.

Contingency plans have been developed in case of an emergency situation.
