| Description: | This project involves the replacement of the two (2) existing corrugated metal pipe arches with a precast concrete arch. The arch will be supported by cast-in-place concrete footers and will include modular block retaining wingwalls on all four corners of the proposed bridge to tie into existing side slopes. The use of a combination of precast/prefabricated elements and cast-in-place elements has been selected for long-term durability of the structure, to reduce the time needed for construction and an associated traffic detour, and to accommodate variations in the elevations of rock. Additional work includes extending the sidewalk on the north side of the roadway across the bridge and ending near the intersection of Dustin Drive. Guardrail on the north side of roadway will be removed, but guardrail on the south side of the roadway will be replaced with guardrail that meets current design standards. The total width of the roadway will remain unchanged from the existing condition. Work will be performed under a full road closure with a posted detour for vehicular traffic. | ||
| Justification: | Bridge 1-065 is in need of replacement as the existing pipes have been deemed structurally deficient. Corrosion of the metal at the waterline has caused localized areas of the pipe to weaken. Additionally, debris flowing downstream during storm events has caused significant deformation of the upstream end of the pipes reducing hydraulic efficiency. Currently the bridge is monitored monthly by DelDOT Bridge Maintenance to assess the structural health of the existing pipes. Given the condition of the pipes and the required opening needed for hydraulic capacity during storm events, the existing pipes are in need of replacement. |
