Delaware Transit Corporation, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Transportation, has conducted a study of passenger rail service to downstate Delaware and Eastern Shore Maryland. Results of the study to date will be presented at the workshop.

The study was authorized under the Federal Railroad Administrations High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program that is considering existing rail corridors for future potential passenger service.

The Delmarva Rail Study examined the potential for Amtrak service from points on the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C. and New York City to destinations in the resort area. Within Delaware this would be mainly on existing Norfolk Southern Railway track and possibly the Maryland and Delaware Railroad extending to Berlin, Maryland. At the request of Maryland DOT, the potential and cost of reestablishing rail service to Ocean City was also examined.

The study evaluated:

Capital cost of establishing service - track upgrades for higher speeds, signal systems, grade crossing improvements, stations, sidings, etc.
Potential ridership - daily round trips between shore points and Washington, New York, or both.
Ongoing operations and maintenance costs, ticket revenues, and required operating subsidies.

Public comments will be incorporated into the final report of the studys initial phase. DTC staff and project consultants will be on hand to discuss the study and receive comments from the public. A brief presentation will be made at 4:30 and 6 p.m.
