TRAFFIC ALERT - I-95 Fifth Lane Widening to begin on Monday, June 4

DelDOT Notifies Motorists of Nighttime Lane Closures with Reduce Speed Limits

Wilmington -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces the upcoming I-95 Fifth Lane widening project will begin next week. The lane closures will begin on Monday, June 4 on I-95 southbound from the Route 141 interchange southbound ramp to just south of the Churchmans Road Bridge over I-95. In addition, starting on Monday, June 11 on I-95 northbound there will be lane closures just south of Churchmans Road to the I-495/I-95 split.

Southbound Lane Restrictions starting June 4

* Monday night through Friday morning: One lane will be closed at 9 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open by 5 a.m. Normal traffic patterns will resume from 5 a.m. through 9 p.m. Motorists will be advised in advance with detours, if lanes are reduced to one lane.
* Friday night through Saturday morning: One lane will be closed at 10 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at midnight. All lanes will be open by 6 a.m.
* Saturday night through Sunday morning: One lane will be closed at 8 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open by 7 a.m.
* Sunday night through Monday morning: One lane will be closed at 9 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 11 p.m. All lanes will be open by 5 a.m.

On Monday, June 11 on I-95 northbound just south of the Churchmans Road to I-495/I-95 split, there will be the following nighttime lane restrictions:

Northbound Lane Restrictions starting June 11

* Monday night through Friday morning: One lane will be closed at 9 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open by 5 a.m. Normal traffic patterns will resume from 5 a.m. through 9 p.m. Motorists will be advised in advance with detours, if lanes are reduced to one lane.
* Friday night through Saturday morning: One lane will be closed at 10 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at midnight. All lanes will be open by 6 a.m.
* Saturday night through Sunday morning: One lane will be closed at 8 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open by 7 a.m.
* Sunday night through Monday morning: One lane will be closed at 9 p.m.; and two lanes will be closed at 11 p.m. All lanes will be open by 5 a.m.

During the day, all four lanes will be maintained. The speed limit in the work zone area will be reduced to 45 mph. Delaware State Police will be on site at all times.

This project consists of the following: reconstruct and rebuild median center barrier, add new shoulder, and a fifth lane along I-95 in the northbound and southbound directions. The work timetable for this project will be 24/7.

This project is part of a multi-year, multi-project I-95 Improvement Program that has included work at the Churchmans Road/Route 7 Intersection and the Churchmans Road Bridge over I-95. Project completion is set for mid-November 2008 at a cost of $51.9 million. The contractor for this project is R. E. Pierson.

Message boards are in place along I-95 alerting motorists of the upcoming construction. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, slow down in work zones, and expect delays.
