DE Transit - DART First State Garners Prestigious 2003 APTA National Public Transportation System Outstanding Achievement Award
One of the highest honors and awards in the North American transportation industry is the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) annual Public Transportation System Outstanding Achievement Award, and for 2003, it is being bestowed upon the Delaware Transit Corporation - DART First State (DTC).
This award again spotlights Delaware, DelDOT, and DTC-DART First State nationally and to the hundreds of transportation systems that comprise APTA, which is headquartered in Washington, DC. APTA's membership has reached an all-time high of 1,459 including five new international member organizations, such as Germany, Korea, China, and Australia.
This annual prestigious award is given in the category for systems that carry between 4 million and 30 million passengers, and representing many cities in North America. Last year the award went to the Utah Transit Authority for its extraordinary efforts in providing transit services to thousands of visitors to the Winter Olympics.
The award honors systems that demonstrate achievement in efficiency and effectiveness in many areas. These areas include services and programs, safety, operations, customer service, financial management, attendance and employee costs, minority and women advancement, marketing, policy and administration, and community relations.
DTC's award entry evidenced that DelDOT and DTC have done much to advance public transportation in Delaware. Especially noteworthy are these recent programs:
- An unprecedented incentive based five-year agreement with DTC's drivers/maintenance union tied to rider and revenue numbers.
- The State's first trolley service in downtown Wilmington along with a unique "Z-Card" pocket map and city guide, and the enrollment of 40 downtown businesses as trolley information ambassadors and schedule outlets.
- The first statewide system in the US for Fannie Mae's Smart Commute mortgage program.
DTC and DelDOT will be presented with the 2003 Public Transportation System Outstanding Achievement Award in a special awards ceremony at APTA's annual meeting, held this fall in Salt Lake, Utah.
