Ladies And Gentlemen Turn Off Your Engines...Ride The Dart First State Race Express Bus!
Raymond C. Miller, Executive Director of the Delaware Transit Corporation, announced today that on Sunday, June 1, DART First State's "Race Express Bus" will once again whisk race fans from either the Christiana Mall Park & Ride or the Blue Hen Corporate Center to the Dover International Speedway for the MBNA America 400 Race.
The Race Express Bus from the Christiana Mall Park & Ride will take NASCAR fans directly to Dover International Speedway. The bus departs the Christiana Mall at 7:30 AM, with 1,000 seats available on a first come, first served basis. The cost per person is $10.00 round trip, with children 46-inches in height or under riding for free. After the race the Express Bus will take race fans to the Blue Hen Corporate Center. From there the shuttle will immediately return to Christiana Mall.
For $20.00 per car, NASCAR fans can also park at the Blue Hen Corporate Center on US 113 in Dover, and all vehicle occupants can ride the Race Express Bus to and from Dover International Speedway at no cost. The Race Express Bus will avoid race day traffic congestion by traveling south on US 113, away from the traffic, and getting on DE 1 to an exclusive, buses-only exit ramp leading directly to Dover International Speedway; all in only 12 minutes time. The service will begin at 8:00 AM, and will be available to transport passengers back and forth until 1 hour after the race.
DART First State will use a fleet of its modern, wheelchair lift-equipped buses to transport passengers to the race. With more than 200 spaces at the Christiana Mall Park & Ride and 3,000 parking spaces in the Blue Hen Corporate Center lot, ample parking will be available. Flyers directing people to the Park & Ride lots will be distributed at local businesses and hotels in New Castle County. All DART First State buses are equipped with E-ZPass tags, for even quicker service through the toll plaza on the day of the race. DART will be observing Dover International Speedway's Gate Admission Policy for carry-on items.
The Race Express Bus Park & Ride service at the Blue Hen Corporate Center was initiated in the Fall of 1995, in an effort to alleviate race day traffic congestion on Route 1, US 13, and US 113. The service from Christiana Mall was started in June of 2000. The numbers have steadily increased over the last eight years. At last September's MBNA All American Heroes 400 Race, DART First State carried 896 people from Christiana Mall and from the Blue Hen Corporate Center 9,337 people parked 3,206 cars in the Blue Hen Corporate Center lot and rode the bus to and from the race.
DART First State conducted a survey of Race Express Bus riders, which showed that the majority cited convenience and lack of traffic hassles as the reason for using the service. The majority of those surveyed came from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. Other Park & Ride users came from New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, DC and Ohio, with others coming from as far as Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
