The project is located along the SR 1 corridor in the town of Little Heaven, Kent County, Delaware. The approximate limits are from south of Barretts Chapel Rd to north of Mulberrie Point Rd.
The SR1, Grade Separated Intersection Project was identified through the Corridor Capacity Preservation Program as a potential grade separated intersection location. Conceptual alternatives were developed, and a Preferred Alternative was selected. The Preferred Alternative includes a bridge carrying SR1 over Bowers Beach Road, as well as service roads running adjacent to both sides of SR1 for access to the many existing and proposed developments along the corridor. The project will improve the local road network while helping to preserve the capacity of SR1.
Construction Phase: Construction began November 2015.
Current Alignment of SR 1:
North end of Project
In early July the Contractor will be eliminating the lane shift on southbound SR 1 at the north end of the project. The lanes will be restored to their original location.
Also at the north end of the project, the Contractor is preparing to modify the lane shift on northbound SR 1. Instead of shifting traffic to the east, it will be shifted to the west to allow for construction of a permanent barrier wall.
South end of Project
The Contractor is wrapping up paving operations on southbound SR 1 between Barratts Chapel and the North Frederica Interchange. Paving between Barratts Chapel and Webb's Market will follow.
Median drainage has been installed.
Clapham Road, Buffalo Road & SR 1 Ramps:
In July, the concrete barrier wall will be removed from Clapham Road.
Buffalo road is slated to be closed in early to mid-July for a full reconstruction and realignment of the road. Once complete, Buffalo Road will intersect Clapham Road directly across from the proposed SR 1 ramps. While Buffalo Road is closed residents will have access, but no thru traffic will be possible.
The new ramps to and from SR 1 southbound are complete, but cannot be opened until Buffalo Road is realigned and a new signal is installed on Clapham Road.
Once the signal is installed and the ramps are opened, Clapham Road will be closed between Buffalo Road and SR 1 for widening and full reconstruction. Access to SR 1 southbound will be maintained via the new ramps. The Contractor is looking to start this work in the fall.
Little Heaven Road:
Mulberrie Point Road is currently closed for full reconstruction. Once complete, the new alignment of Mulberrie Point Road will be opened and connected to SR 1 northbound with one way westbound traffic. This configuration will remain until the new alignment of SR 1 is complete.
Front Street is closed and will remain closed until SR 1 northbound traffic is shifted onto Little Heaven Road.
Most of Little Heaven Road is complete to the stone grade. The Contractor expects to complete paving this summer. The Contractor expects to shift SR 1 northbound traffic onto Little Heaven Road in late summer/early fall. Prior to this shift, the following must occur:
New SR 1 Alignments:
The Contractor has built much of the embankment for proposed SR 1 northbound. Pile has been installed for the SR 1 northbound bridge over Bowers Beach Road, with more to be driven for SR 1 southbound.
Anticipated Completion in Fall 2018.
