The lane reconfiguration is part of a larger project that starts in Newport on Maryland Ave, State Route 4, at the intersection of Augustine St. The project ends in Wilmington at the intersection of Maryland Ave and Martin Luther King Blvd.
The pavement on Maryland Ave from Newport to Wilmington is in need of repair. Curb ramps and transit facilities along Maryland Ave are in need of upgrades to become accessible.
The Lane Reconfiguration is part of a larger project on Maryland Ave that will involve milling and overlaying the existing pavement to preserve the pavement. From the intersection of DuPont Rd to Broom St, the existing lane configuration will change from a 4 lane road with no turn lanes, to a 2 lane road with a continuous turning lane in the median area. Bike lanes and parking lanes will be provided on both sides of the road. From the intersection of Broom St to Beech St, the existing lane configuration will change from a 4 lane road with no turn lanes, to a 2 lane road with parking lanes on both sides of the road and a bike lane on the westbound side. Curb ramp improvements will be made to improve accessibility for the length of the corridor. Accessibility improvements will also be provided for transit facilities including the implementation of "bump-outs".
Construction will begin in late summer/early fall of 2019 and is anticipated to be complete by fall 2020.
