New Updates February 10, 2011 - Statement About Overnight Fire at the Bridge
At approximately 1:15am this morning, February 10, 2011, a Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) maintenance employee spotted a small fire on the north side of the new bridge construction site near the transition pier (between approach span and main bridge deck).
DelDOT's Transportation Management Center (TMC) and the Bethany Fire Department were immediately notified. DelDOT's Project Team and Skanska were immediately called as well. The Fire Department responded and arrived on scene at approx 1:30 am, and the fire was extinguished within minutes.
In preparation for a second concrete pour on the form traveler today, February 10, 2011, Skanska crews were preheating a previously poured area. It initially appears as if plywood used to cover the concrete/formwork heater controls from the weather was ignited by the exhaust system for the heater causing a fire to start.
The Fire Department shut the heater off and Skanska crews removed the damaged plywood and restarted the heaters.
No damage occurred to the form traveler or the bridge structure and today's scheduled concrete pour will move forward as planned.
