Project Limits:

300 feet north and south of the bridge

Project Need:

The existing structure consists of concrete encased steel beams on concrete abutments that was widened with a concrete frame. The steel beams have significant corrosion and loss of section. The concrete frame and concrete abutments have some delamination and spalls. The existing structure is structurally deficient and was selected by the Pontis Bridge Management System for work.

Project Overview:

This project involves the partial replacement of the existing southbound portion of the bridge with a precast concrete three-sided frame. Additional work includes installation of guardrail, placement of riprap in the stream for scour protection, and reconstruction of the approach roadway.

Project Timeline:

Design Phase:

Design work to be completed no later than Summer, 2018.

Construction Phase:

Construction work to be completed no later than Spring, 2019.

Additional Comments:

The work will be performed over a week long closure to decrease the amount of impact on the public. Multiple phasing will be used to ensure that the northbound portion of US113 is open to traffic during construction. The existing bridge was ranked 99th on the 2016 DelDOT Bridge Deficiency List.
