[Aerial] Bridge 2-357P has been identified by DelDOT's bridge management system as being in need of removal.
[West Approach] The bridge is located in a rural area east of Sorghum Mill Road over St. Jones River.

[South Elevation] This project consists of the removal of the two-girder steel superstructure with timber decking/rails, timber piers, and stone/concrete foundations. The steel girders have active corrosion [Beam Corrosion]. The bridge substructure is experiencing undermining, settlement, and general deterioration [General Settlement]. The existing bridge has been closed for over two years, and the condition of the existing pedestrian bridge warrants a full removal of the structure.

[Construction Plan] (zoom in around project limits) As seen on the plan sheet, DelDOT is proposing to remove the existing pedestrian bridge in its entirety. Additional work will include placing riprap along the western bank of the St. Jones River for scour protection, replacing a secondary drainage pipe with a 24" HDPE pipe, and minor re-grading of the river side slopes.

[Bridge Plan] | Demo Plan] In keeping with the Department's mission that includes providing "a safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation network.." DelDOT is proposing the removal of Bridge 2-357P in its entirety. The removal of the existing pedestrian bridge will allow the St. Jones River to flow more naturally. This should decrease the high velocities in the waterway and help to alleviate the erosion issues caused by the bridge substructure constricting the flow of the St. Jones River.

[Construction Sequence] | [TA-10 of MUTCD] Because of the nature of the work and DelDOT's commitment to safety of the public, the project will occur under an intermittent lane closure with flaggers. As can be seen on Typical Application 10 of the MUTCD, motorists heading in either direction on Sorgum Mill Road will be directed into a single lane of traffic for the limits of construction by a flagger.

[Construction Plan] Although we strive to perform as much of our work within our existing right-of-way as possible, sometimes the nature of the work requires a larger area than what is provided, as is the case for this project. Minor easements will be required from the adjacent property owners to complete this work. Temporary construction easements will be needed for the placement of riprap and for the minor stream bank grading. These areas will be restored to their natural condition upon completion of the work. A real estate representative will contact the affected property owners shortly to go over the Department's Real Estate process.
