Bridge 2-234A has been identified by DelDOT’s bridge management system as being in need of repair. The bridge is located in a rural area on Lake Front Drive over Red House Branch

[Project Photos] This project consists of one corrugated metal pipe arch. There is significant corrosion at the waterline with 100% section loss at several locations throughout the pipe arch. Although the existing pipe arch is safe to carry normal traffic at this time, the condition of the existing arches warrants a full replacement of the structure.

[Construction Plan]As seen on the plan sheet, DelDOT is proposing to slide two 5’-6” diameter steel-reinforced high density polyethylene pipes into the existing corrugated metal pipe arch. Additional work will include placing riprap for scour protection downstream, and reshaping the channel and side slope. Reconstructing the approaches will be performed as necessary.

[Bridge Plan, Section and Elevation] In keeping with the Department’s mission that includes providing “a safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation network…” DelDOT is proposing the replacement of Bridge 2-234A. The new bridge is designed using the clear zone method on the downstream and the upstream side of the bridge. The clear zone concept is defined as an area clear of fixed objects adjacent to the roadway to provide a recovery zone for vehicles that have left the traveled way. The new pipes will be longer than the existing pipe to allow for the recovery area and construction of the reinforced topsoil shoulders. In order to minimize impact to the area, this will eliminate the need for guardrail on either side of the structure without compromising safety.

Because of the nature of the work and DelDOT’s commitment to safety of the public, a portion of the roadway will be closed for the duration of the project. One lane of the roadway will be open to local traffic. Traffic will be directed by flaggers in the opposing, open lane.

[Construction Plan] Although we strive to perform as much of our work within our existing right-of-way as possible, sometimes the nature of the work requires a larger area than what is provided, as is the case for this project. Minor easements will be required from the adjacent property owners to complete this work. Permanent easements will be required for the placement of the riprap in and around the stream. The riprap will be buried and covered with streambed material (in the stream) or topsoil, grass seed, and mulch (stream banks). Temporary construction easements will be needed beyond the permanent easements for the placement of sandbags so that the in-stream work can be completed and for the tie-in grading. These areas will be restored to their natural condition upon completion of the work.
