Bridge 1-651 Newport Road
The comment period has ended. Thank you!
Welcome to the Delaware Department of Transportation’s virtual workshop. The goals of the virtual workshop formats are to make it easier for more people to view the project information, and to reduce the costs involved in traditional public workshops. This is a workshop rehabilitation of bridge 1-651 on Newport Road over the CSX railroad.
This bridge was constructed in 2011 over the CSX railroad. The required vertical clearance is 21’-6"; however the bridge is 5” short of the required clearance from top of rail to bottom of beam.
[Jacking Plan] As seen on the plan sheet, DelDOT proposes to raise the existing superstructure, construct concrete pedestals (to meet the required height), and install new bearing pads. Additional work will include the modification of the sidewalk and parapets. The approach roadway will be overlaid to provide a smooth transition. This work should take approximately forty days to complete, and is scheduled to occur during the summer of 2016.
[Detour Plan] During construction, the road will have to be closed in order to perform the proposed work. As you can see, a short detour route has been planned to accommodate the traveling public.
Detour Map: This map more clearly demonstrates the route that through-traffic will take during the short period of closure.
Highlight routes on the map: Coming from the west, motorists will make a right turn onto old capitol trail, then a left onto station road, and then left onto Kiamensi Road. Motorists from the east will turn right onto Kiamensi Road, then turn right onto station road, and another right onto Old Capitol Trail. Local access will be maintained on both sides of the bridge for residents use during the duration of the project.
[Construction Plan] Deldot strives to perform as much of the work as possible within the department’s existing right-of-way; sometimes the nature of the work requires a larger area than what is provided. For this project, all work will be done in the existing right-of-way.
