Reeves Crossing Road Bridge (BR 2-286A)

[Aerial] Bridge 2-286A has been identified by DelDOT's bridge management system as being in need of repair. [East Approach Roadway] The bridge is located in a rural area on Reeves Crossing Road over Murderkill River.

[North Elevation] This project consists of three corrugated metal pipes that are in need of replacement. The pipes have active corrosion with measurable section loss [Pipe Corrosion]. The corrosion has resulted in a loss of section over the length of the pipes. Although the pipes are safe to carry normal traffic at this time, the condition of the existing pipes warrants a full replacement of the structure.

[Construction Plan] As seen on the plan sheet, DelDOT is proposing to replace the existing corrugated metal pipes with three 6'-0" diameter reinforced concrete pipes which will be placed in the same locations. Additional work will include placing riprap in the stream for scour protection, removing and replacing the existing guardrail, and reshaping the channel and side slopes.

[Plan Elevation] In keeping with the Department's mission that includes providing "a safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation network..." DelDOT is proposing the replacement of Bridge 2-286A. The new bridge is designed using guardrail on the downstream and the upstream side of the bridge. The guardrail will be used to protect travelers from obstructions off of the roadway.

[Detour Plan] Because of the nature of the work and DelDOT's commitment to safety of the public, a portion of the roadway will be closed for the duration of the project. As can be seen on the Detour Plan, motorists heading west on Killens Pond Road will take South DuPont Highway to East Main Street to Lumbard Street to Little Mastens Corner Road. Motorists wanting to go east will take Little Mastens Corner Road to Lumbard Street to East Main Street to South DuPont Highway to Killens Pond Road.

[Construction Plan] Although we strive to perform as much of our work within our existing right-of-way as possible, sometimes the nature of the work requires a larger area than what is provided, as is the case for this project. Minor easements will be required from the adjacent property owners to complete this work. Permanent easements will be required for the placement of the riprap in and around the stream. The riprap will be buried and covered with streambed material (in the stream) or topsoil, grass seed, and mulch (stream banks). Temporary construction easements will be needed beyond the permanent easements for the placement of sandbags so that the in-stream work can be completed and for the tie-in grading. These areas will be restored to their natural condition upon completion of the work. A real estate representative will contact the affected property owners shortly to go over the Department's Real Estate process.
