Chance Road Bridge (BR 2-140A)

[Aerial] Bridge 2-140A was been identified by DelDOT's bridge management system as being in need of repair. [East Approach Roadway] The bridge is located in a rural area on Chance Road over Jordan Branch.

[North Elevation] This project consisted of three corrugated metal pipes that were in need of replacement. The pipes had active corrosion with measurable section loss [Pipe Corrosion]. The corrosion resulted in a loss of section over the length of the pipes. Although the pipes were safe to carry normal traffic, the condition of the existing pipes warranted a full replacement of the structure.

[Construction Plan] As seen on the plan sheet, DelDOT was proposing to replace the existing corrugated metal pipes with three 4'-0 x 6'-4" reinforced concrete elliptical pipes which will be placed in the same locations. Additional work will include placing riprap in the stream for scour protection, replacing a secondary drainage pipe with a 12" H.D.P.E. pipe, and reshaping the channel and side slopes.

[Plan Elevation] In keeping with the Department's mission that includes providing "safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation network..." DelDOT is proposing the replacement of Bridge 2-140A. The new bridge is designed using the clear zone concept on the downstream and the upstream side of the bridge. The clear zone concept is defined as an area clear of fixed objects adjacent to the roadway to provide a recovery zone for vehicles that have left the traveled way. The new pipes will be longer than the existing pipes to allow for the recovery area and construction of the reinforced topsoil shoulders. In order to minimize impact to the area, this will eliminate the need for guardrail on either side of the structure without compromising safety.

[Detour Plan] Because of the nature of the work and DelDOT's commitment to safety of the public, a portion of the roadway will be closed for the duration of the project. As can be seen on the Detour Plan, motorists heading east on Chance Road will take Hopewell Drive to Underwoods Corner Road to Wildlife Road to Chance Road. Motorists heading west on Chance Road will take Wildlife Road to Underwoods Corner Road to Hopewell Drive to Chance Road.

[Construction Plan] Although we strive to perform as much of our work within our existing right-of-way as possible, sometimes the nature of the work requires a larger area than what is provided, as is the case for this project. Minor easements will be required from the adjacent property owners to complete this work. Permanent easements will be required for the placement of the riprap in and around the stream. The riprap will be buried and covered with streambed material (in the stream) or topsoil, grass seed, and mulch (stream banks). Temporary construction easements will be needed beyond the permanent easements for the placement of sandbags so that the in-stream work can be completed and for the tie-in grading. These areas will be restored to their natural condition upon completion of the work. A real estate representative will contact the affected property owners shortly to go over the Department's Real Estate process.
