Pedestrian Safety Audits
A Pedestrian Safety Audit is a formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team focusing on improving safety for pedestrians. Pedestrian Safety Audits are conducted on corridors that have a history of pedestrian related crashes. These crashes typically occur on multilane divided highways in urban or suburban areas, such as US 13 through New Castle, Kirkwood Highway, US 40, the beach resorts along SR 1, etc. These corridors consist of established pedestrian routes, transit usage and land use that generate pedestrians, however the land use and existing transportation facilities may not be compatible or adequate for increased pedestrian travel. Pedestrian safety audits are completed with a diverse audit team consisting of staff from DelDOT, the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, Delaware State Police and numerous other safety partners that can provide different perspectives, issues, and suggestions for pedestrian safety improvements along the study corridor.
The table below depicts all Pedestrian Safety Audits that have been completed to date. More information on each pedestrian safety audit can be found by viewing the audit reports and improvement recommendations. DelDOT is continually working on implementing the recommended improvements, so please check back periodically for updates on these locations.
