Delaware Freight Overview
Our transportation system is used to move people from one place to another and the commodities that we need in our everyday lives. Trucks, ships, and rail lines are used to transport goods to and from stores, factories, and other locations. This has a significant impact on our transportation system. In 2020, approximately 68.7 million tons of freight worth $101.3 billion moved to, from, or within Delaware.
Delaware Freight Plan 2022
The state freight plan update has been completed. The plan has:
- Met all current federal freight planning guidelines
- Provided a complete overview of current freight trends in Delaware
- Utilized the latest supply chain/technology to further express the impact of freight in Delaware
- Identified policy needs and strategies to ensure the efficient movement of freight in Delaware
- Identified key freight projects and related investment plans (TIP/CTP) for a five-year forecast period
- Further developed and amplified collaborative efforts among freight stakeholders, as well as regional, state, and local partners
The Delaware Freight Plan was most recently updated to comply with the federal freight planning requirements introduced in November 2021 by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The draft Plan was developed from summer 2021 to fall 2022, and the Federal Highway Administration approved the Plan in December 2022.
