The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is holding a public workshop to update the public on the status of the Western Parkway Project. This workshop will present the Alternatives Retained for Detailed Study including a grade separated interchange at the US 9 / Route 1 (Five Points) intersection. The public is encouraged to attend the workshop to review and provide comments on the Retained Alternatives as well as information that will be presented on the natural and cultural environment and traffic analysis.

The proposed Western Parkway Project is one of the recommendations contained in a report that resulted from the State Route 1 Land Use and Transportation Study (LUTS), a joint DelDOT and Sussex County study that began in 2001 and ended in 2003. Because the LUTS was a conceptual level analysis, a more detailed study is necessary to examine current and future traffic demand, develop alternatives, evaluate impacts to cultural and natural resources, obtain public input, select a preferred alignment, and obtain/protect the necessary rights-of-way and easements. This project is fully funded through selection and approval of a preferred alternative for a controlled access facility west of State Route 1.

DelDOT and Sussex County have executed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) which outlines a cooperative process for implementing the recommendations of the State Route 1 Land Use and Transportation Study. This MOA sets forth the framework for DelDOT and Sussex County to cooperatively conduct studies, select an alignment, and protect the right-of-way for the preferred alignment.

A brief presentation will be made at 4:15 p.m. and repeated at 5:15 and 6:15. Comments and suggestions provided at the public workshop will be used to further develop and evaluate the alternatives throughout the project development process including preparation of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project. Public input is welcomed and encouraged.

Information about the project can be obtained from the project's website at http://www.deldot.gov/static/projects/western_parkway.

Interested persons are invited to express their views in writing, giving reasons for support of or in opposition to, the proposed project. Comments will be received during the workshop or can be mailed to DelDOT Public Relations, P.O. Box 778, Dover, DE 19903. When applicable, we offer the opportunity to fill out a questionnaire online which will automatically get emailed to Public Relations.
