Press Release -- August 4, 2009
TRAFFIC ALERT - South Governors Avenue Open to Thru-Traffic
Improved Puncheon Run Bridge Now Allows for Limited Access
Dover --
The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that South Governors Avenue between Webbs Lane and Wyoming Avenue will be open to thru-traffic as of Wednesday, August 5. Motorists are cautioned that while the road - specifically the Puncheon Run Bridge - is open to thru-traffic, construction in the area continues, and they may encounter delays and lane restrictions.
South Governors Avenue, south of Wyoming Avenue, has been closed since July 2008 while the bridge that crosses the Puncheon Run was replaced. It is anticipated that the new bridge, with a larger area through which water can pass, along with a higher deck surface, will help alleviate some of the flooding conditions that have occurred in the area.
The full project from Water Street to Webbs Lane is a two-phased plan, with each taking about a year to complete. The completion of the bridge work is part of Phase One. Work crews have begun moving northward along South Governors Avenue where the next phase of the $11-million project will occur. The entire project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010.
Complete roadway improvements include a 14-foot center turn lane, 11-foot travel lanes in each direction, curbing on both sides of the road, a grass strip between the road and sidewalk, a 5-foot sidewalk on each side of the street, and drainage improvements. In addition, the visual aesthetics will be improved with the burial of all utilities and the elimination of utility poles.
