Reconstruction Project on Choptank Road Begins Next Week

Middletown -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is proud to announce that the design is completed, the contract has been awarded and the resources are in place to begin the total reconstruction of Choptank Road on Monday, June 18. This major $11.3 million project was awarded to Greggo & Ferrara Inc., of New Castle, and will last approximately three years.

This project is a full reconstruction, which means that the entire roadway will be rebuilt. The footprint of the proposed road will be two 11-foot lanes and two five-foot shoulders that will also serve as bike lanes since Choptank is part of Bike Route 1. DelDOT will also provide an adequate drainage system and constructing three roundabouts located at Bunker Hill Road, Churchtown Road, and Bethel Church Road. These flagship rural roundabouts will provide safe movement through the intersections and deter truck traffic.

"I am very excited to see this project actually begin," said project manager Pamela Steinebach. "When it is completed, the road will make it safer for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists as well as residents along the road. This project is a great example of what the employees at DelDOT strive to accomplish."

Throughout the project, there will be single-lane closures. No portions of the road will be closed to all traffic until at least Labor Day.

The work will be done in five phases:

1. Now to Fall 2007 - Intersection of Choptank and Bunker Hill roads
2. Fall 2007 to Spring 2008 - Choptank Road from Bunker Hill Road to Armstrong Corner Road
3. Spring 2008 to Summer 2008 - Intersection of Choptank and Churchtown roads
4. Summer 2008 to Winter 2008 - Choptank Road from Armstrong Corner Road to Churchtown Road
5. Winter 2008 to Summer 2009 - Intersection of Choptank and Bethel Church roads
