Event Celebrates Road Construction At US Route 13/Route 404 Intersection

Bridgeville -- Representatives from the Department of Transportation and the Town of Bridgeville joined others today to celebrate the official start of construction of the US Route 13/Route 404 Intersection Realignment and Bridgeville Service Roads Project. This project will address safety and traffic flow problems currently existing at this key location along the US Route 13 corridor.

Mumford and Miller Concrete, Inc. will complete the work on the $15 million project, which is anticipated to be completed in late 2008.

Robert McCleary, DelDOT's project supervisor states, "Not only will this project make travel through the area safer and easier, the initial road construction will mostly occur in the fields outside the current road alignment, therefore not impacting motorists until the latter part of the project."

The location was identified as a high-accident area in both 1998 and 2001, since there were 83 accidents over a five year period (1994-1999). Many of the accidents occurred because of the skewed angles that exist as Delaware Route 404 intersects with US Route 13.

As part of the proposed improvements of this project, Route 404 will be realigned to intersect US Route 13 at a perpendicular angle. The improvements will also include additional lanes through the intersection, including turn lanes, which will improve both traffic flow and safety.

The project was also identified as being one of the corridor's under the Corridor Capacity Preservation Program. The program established in 1996 preserves the regional function of selected corridors in Delaware. The program's approach on US Route 13 is to improve local streets, construct service roads and limit new access in rural areas along the corridor. In doing so, the function of US Route 13 can be restored to one of regional nature and new/improved local roadways would accommodate local traffic.

A secondary purpose of the improvement project is to accommodate additional traffic generated by ongoing and proposed developments along US Route 13.
