Press Release -- January 19, 2006
Woodland Ferry Out Of Service
Laurel --
The Department of Transportation announces that the Woodland Ferry in northwest Laurel was taken out of service last week due to mechanical issues involving the hydraulic pump on the vessel. The Department will make the necessary repairs over the next three weeks. The estimated time of three weeks will give crews time to evaluate several major components of the vessel. Weather permitting and expected repairs made, the ferry is expected to be back in service in the beginning of February.
The ferry will not operate until these repairs can be made, at which time, the ferry will resume its regular schedule.
The ferry is in need of replacement and the Department had plans to replace the old ferry with a new vessel. However, after it was determined in June of 2005 that no new revenue sources would be forthcoming, the Department was forced to cut or delay approximately 50 planned projects statewide, including the purchasing of a new ferry. The Department will continue to operate the existing ferry until appropriate funding is secured and a new ferry can be ordered. Updates regarding the operational status of the ferry will be released once it is available.
