US113 North/South Study

Short-Term Improvements

While the alternatives being considered as part of the US 113 North/South Study are long-term improvements, DelDOT is also making short-term improvements to help improve the local traffic conditions now.

DelDOT has implemented short-term improvements underway at the following intersections along the US 113 corridor:

  • US 113/SR 18 & SR 404 (Georgetown)
  • US 113/SR24 (Millsboro)

US 113/SR 18 & SR 404

The intersection of US 113 at SR 18/SR 404 in Georgetown currently operates at a substandard level of service during both the summer and non-summer peak hours. To improve operations prior to implementation of the long-term recommendations of the US 113 North/South Study, DelDOT evaluated short-term improvements at this intersection.

The following capacity improvements were recommended based on an input from the Georgetown Area Working Group:

  • Convert the exclusive right-turn lane on the westbound SR 18/SR 404 approach to a shared through/right turn lane.
  • Modify the medians and directional islands to accommodate concurrent left-turns for the SR 18/SR 404 approaches. The modifications require full-depth pavement patching.
  • Upgrade the traffic signal equipment to accommodate concurrent SR 18/SR 404 phases.
  • Install pavement striping as required by the modifications.
  • Modify curb ramps in accordance with ADA standards.
The above improvements were included in a recent DelDOT contract to improve several roadways in Sussex County and are currently being built:
