Projects
SR1/Route 9 Grade Separated Intersection

Project Limits

The project is located in Kent County at the south end of the Dover Air Force Base where SR1 - Bay Road, SR9 - Bayside Drive and Kitts Hummock Roads intersect. This is also the area where the John Dickinson Plantation and the Air Mobility Command Museum are located. The construction limits on SR1 are from the Barker's Landing bridge in the South to the entrance of Tilcon to the north. The westerly limits are confined by the active Tilcon borrow site and tie-in to existing SR9 to the east of Kitts Hummock Road.

Project Overview

The intersection of SR1 and SR9 has been identified for needed improvements under the Corridor Capacity Preservation Program and the Highway Safety Improvement Program. This existing intersection is located in a curve on a high speed roadway and does not provide sufficient site distance. The proposed improvements will provide an elevated crossing with the grade separation and remove the safety hazards that exist with the existing geometry. Access will be provided via a four ramp system and realignment of Kitts Hummock Road.

Project Schedule
Construction began October 1, 2008
