Route 1 Expansion Project from Route 24 to Route 9/Five Points Intersection

Public Outreach

Press Releases:

General Public Information:

Motorists:

  • During construction, Route 1 from Five Points Intersection to Route 24 will be decreased from three to two travel lanes. This will create significant travel delays.
  • Motorists may take the following routes into the beach area:
  • Primary Routes to Lewes, Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches:
    • Follow Route 1 south - Expect Delays
  • Primary Routes to Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island and Ocean City, MD:
    • Take Route 113 south to Route 20 or Route 26 east
  • See map of the primary routes
Cyclist Information:
  • Cyclists should use Bike Route 1/Plantations Road, as a safer alternate route through the area.
  • The Department of Transportation does not encourage cycling in the travel lanes of Route 1 for safety reasons. However, Delaware law indicates that this is the legal place for cyclists to ride.
  • Cyclists may also wish to ride DART First State buses equipped with bike racks.
  • If traveling through the work zone, we caution you to follow the rules of the road. (Drive with the flow of traffic, wear bright reflective clothing, install lights on your bicycle, wear a helmet)
  • Junction & Breakwater Trail Map - trail linking Lewes and Rehoboth areas.
Transit Riders:
  • DART First State's Rt. 206 bus provides year-round weekday service between Georgetown, Lewes and Rehoboth. There are 8 daily round trips from 6 AM to 10 PM. The one-way cash fare is $1.00. If you ride more than 2 buses per day, purchasing a daily pass is your best value. For more information call 1-800-652-DART, or visit our website www.DartFirstState.com.

Visitors, residents and bicyclists are all encouraged to use DART's Resort Transit service to avoid driving through the construction zone this summer. From May 24th through September 16th, passengers with their bikes can ride for FREE on Routes 203, 204, 205 and 206. Riders can board any of these routes at the Rehoboth Park and Ride lot located on Shuttle Road, just off of Rt. 1, north of Rehoboth Avenue, or simply wait with their bike at any of the bus stops along the route. The bus can transport 2 bikes at a time, and riders are responsible for loading and unloading their bike from the rack on the front of the bus. Most routes operate from 7 AM to 1 AM, seven days a week.

Due to lane closures during the construction project and for safety reasons, two new temporary bus stops have been established. The southbound Rt. 1 new stop is inside the Tanger Outlet Midway parking lot, across from Nautica. The other new stop is northbound Rt. 1 inside the Midway Shopping Center, behind Allstate Insurance.

Avoid all the traffic and ride to the beach in air-conditioned comfort on DART's Beach Bus, Rt. 305. From May 25th through September 3rd, the Beach Bus runs on Friday nights, Saturday, Sundays and holidays. There is 1 trip on Friday nights, 3 trips on Saturdays, and 2 trips on Sundays and holidays. The Rt. 305 stops at Rodney Square, Amtrak Station, Christiana Mall, Smyrna Rest Stop, Scarborough Road Park and Ride, Milford Super Wal-Mart, and Rehoboth Park and Ride lot, where you can connect to the Resort Transit bus routes.

For more information on DART's Resort Transit or Beach Bus services, visit our website at www.BeachBus.com, or call 1-800-553-DART.
