Projects
Silverside Road and Marsh Road Safety Improvements
|
Project Name
HSIP NCC, Silverside Road and Marsh Road
Project Limits
This project is located north of the City of Wilmington in New Castle County,
Delaware. The project limits are the intersection of Silverside Road and Marsh
Road, the intersection of Marsh Road and Wilson/Veale Road, and the length of
Marsh Road in between the two intersections.
Project Need
A study was completed at this location in 2006, and it was determined that
this area falls under the criteria for the federally-mandated Highway Safety
Improvement Program (HSIP). Within the project limits, there were 84 total
reported accidents from August 2005 through December 2008. Many of these
accidents were caused by unsafe turning movements in and out of the surrounding
shopping centers.
Project Overview
Proposed Improvements:
- Restripe Marsh Road between Silverside Road and Veale/Wilson Roads as one
lane in each direction, with a two-way left turn lane in the center, and bicycle
lanes on both sides.
- Modify the entrances to the Shoppes of Graylyn by eliminating the entrance
closest to the intersection of Silverside Road and Marsh Road, and by expanding
the other entrance on Silverside Road.
- Reduce the size of the entrance to Branmar Plaza II so that the entrance is
further away from the intersection of Silverside Road and Marsh Road.
- Add crosswalks, curb ramps, and sidewalks to improve pedestrian movements at
the Silverside Road and Marsh Road intersection.
