US 40 Environmental Assessment, SR 896 to SR 1

Project Status

July 16, 2007

Included among different phases of the Route 40 Corridor 20-Year Transportation Plan is the widening of US 40 from four to six lanes from SR 896 to Walther Road, interchanges at SR 896 and SR 7, an overpass of the Norfolk Southern railroad near Fox Run, and multiple intersection improvements. A draft environmental assessment (EA), which is a study that evaluates alternatives for a transportation project and selects the preferred alternative, is underway for the US 40 widening. Several issues are considered by an EA through the process of establishing the need for a project, assessing existing conditions, developing engineering alternatives, and evaluating impacts to natural and historic resources. At this time, there is no established schedule for completion of the study, as none of the US 40 widening projects or interchange projects are currently funded or programmed for construction.

Public Workshop

June 10, 2002

A public workshop was held on Monday, June 10, 2002 at Hodgson Vocational-Technical School. At this workshop, the Route 40 project team presented alternatives for widening Route 40 to six lanes between Routes 896 and 1, along with interchanges at Routes 896 and 7 and an overpass of the Norfolk Southern tracks near Fox Run. Based on comments received from the public, as well as technical review by DelDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, and environmental agencies, the project team will refine the alternatives to minimize impacts to properties and natural and cultural resources.

Public Workshop

October 25, 2001

Residents and business representatives along US 40 attended a workshop held on Thursday, October 25, 2001 at Hodgson Vocational-Technical School. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss the need for the potential improvements along US 40, including widening to six lanes, interchanges at SR 896 and SR 7, an overpass at the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing and multiple intersection improvements. Display boards were provided to assess existing natural and cultural resources in the study area along with a typical section. The workshop was one step in the process of identifying a preferred alternative for all improvements in the Corridor.
