Rising Sun Lane Bridge - Detailed Description

Bridge No. 1 001 279

Bridge No. 1 001 279 (Bridge 1) is a single span steel thru truss bridge located on Rising Sun Lane over Brandywine Creek in New Castle County, Delaware. Construction of this structure was completed in 1928 but the structure has been rehabilitated several times. The stone masonry abutments and wing walls predate the 1928 structure because they were left in-place from a previous structure. In 1968 the structural steel railing was replaced, a new deck and sidewalk were placed on top of new crossbeams, and the south abutment footing was stabilized with plain concrete. In 1978 the northwest wing wall was rebuilt, a new deck and sidewalk were placed on top of new crossbeams, the structural steel was cleaned and repainted in deteriorated areas, and deteriorated areas along the steel stringers were plated.

This bridge has a span length of 123'-0"± as measured from centerline of bearing to centerline of bearing. The superstructure consists of seven floor beams and three lines of stringers that support crossbeams and a 6'-1" thick reinforced concrete deck. The floor beams are supported by the truss members on either side of the bridge. This bridge is 23'-0"± wide between the centerline of trusses with an additional 6'-0"± on the east side of the truss for a 5'-0"± clear pedestrian walkway. The clear roadway width is 19'-10"± with 10"± high curbs on both sides. This allows for a two lane bridge with two-way traffic. The traffic barrier system is composed of a structural tube railing on either side of the bridge with lattice and scroll work throughout. The superstructure is supported on two stone masonry abutments.

Bridge No. 1 001A 279

Bridge No. 1 001A 279 (Bridge 1A) is a single span stone masonry culvert. Construction of this structure was completed in 1900 and the bridge was rehabilitated in 1995. The bridge rehabilitation included stone and mortar repair, installation of a new strong back system (tie rods and steel support members) to support the stone masonry headwalls, and drain pipe repairs.

The bridge has a span length of 25'-0"± measured between culvert spring lines. The culvert is under fill which supports an asphalt wearing surface. The culvert barrel is supported on two stone masonry spring walls. The out-to-out width of the bridge is 26'-9"± and the clear roadway width is 20'-3"± with a 3'-0"± wide sidewalk on the east side. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic on the approach roadway for Bridge 1. The traffic barrier system is composed of stone masonry parapets atop the stone masonry wing walls and headwalls.

All work will be done under a complete closure of Rising Sun Lane via detour. Find out more about the detour, and other information
