Blue Ball Properties - News & Updates - Public Art Opportunities for the Blue Ball Project

Public art stimulates community focus, identifies landmarks and gateways to a community and creates an opportunity to highlight an area's special environmental assets. Traditionally thought of as the four M's–murals, monuments, memorials and mimes–today's public art is about almost anything and everything artists and their communities can think up.

The project team has identified several opportunities for public art within the Blue Ball Properties Project. As part of the Master Plan process, these sites were identified as being of great import to the community, and worthy of heightened attention to design detail. The sites include:

  • Park Drive Underpass
  • Route 141 Underpass
  • Blue Ball Dairy Barn Garden
The two bridges being built over Route 202 and their underpasses are critical links in the overall park and community transportation plans. A single artist familiar with the transportation infrastructure logistics will be hired to design these spaces. Special consideration will be given to lighting, surface treatments, wall patterns and landscaping.

As a community landmark, the restoration and reuse of the Blue Ball Dairy Barn is a cause for celebration. An artist will be hired to design the garden of the Dairy Barn, which offers wonderful opportunities for historic references and educational messages. The artist's palette could include special paving, site furnishings, lighting, land sculpting and special wall treatments.

In both cases, the artists will work with a steering committee and present design ideas to the larger community. This will be an exciting time as the artists take into account the site's physical surroundings, as well as other environmental, historic and social factors, in order to develop something unique and wonderful for the Blue Ball Properties.
