Blue Ball Properties - Blue Ball Barn up for Green Certification

The re-use of the historic Blue Ball Dairy Barn, already an environmentally friendly idea, can be made even better by achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. LEED is a voluntary standard for developing environmentally friendly or "green" buildings and land use developments. It was created to define "green building" by establishing a common standard of measurement, promote integrated, whole-building design practices, recognize environmental leadership in the building industry, stimulate green competition, and raise consumer awareness of green building benefits.
DNREC is applying for the LEED certification, and expects that the Blue Ball Dairy Barn will likely achieve a SILVER or GOLD rating. The LEED rating is based on sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection for buildings, and indoor environmental quality. In order to achieve LEED certification, a few necessary changes must be made to the Blue Ball Dairy Barn to meet minimum energy efficiency performance standards. Changes include adding insulation to the exterior walls of the Barn, using a displacement ventilation system in the Barn, adding exterior solar shading to the New Addition, and using high performance energy recovery mechanical units.
