Interstate Highway System - 50th Anniversary
Delaware's Highways
Interstate 95 (abreviated I-95) is one of the best-known, most important, and most heavily travelled highways in the
Interstate system. It serves and connects the major cities along the Northeast corridor, and it is the major north-south
highway along the east coast. It is the longest north-south Interstate highway (five east-west routes are longer), and it
passes through the most states (15) of any Interstate.I-95 comes into Delaware from Maryland. Most of it is the Delaware Turnpike. Interstate 295 splits off and heads over the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike. The mainline heads into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. View the I-95 toll rates
Interstate 495 (abbreviated I-495) in Delaware is a six-lane three-digit bypass of Interstate 95 around the City of
Wilmington, Delaware. Built in the mid-1970's and opened as the "Wilmington Bypass", the highway became, between 1978 and
1982, the route of I-95 around Wilmington, while the original highway through the city, redesignated as I-895, was
reconstructed at the Wilmington Viaduct. In 1982, I-95 was rerouted back onto the original highway, and the bypass
became I-495 again. A similar occurrence happened in 2000 when I-95 was closed off for a total rebuild project between U.S.
Highway 202 and the Pennsylvania state line.
Interstate 295 (abbreviated I-295) in New Jersey and Delaware is a bypass route from a junction with Interstate 95 south of
Wilmington, Delaware to a junction with I-95 north of Trenton, New Jersey. The route runs parallel with the New Jersey
Turnpike for most of its course. Interstate 295 is sometimes called the South Jersey Expressway.I-295 crosses the Delaware River via the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which is actually two suspension bridges carrying traffic in opposite directions. One bridge carries traffic from Delaware to New Jersey, while the other span carries traffic from New Jersey to Delaware. Courtesy of Wikipedia |
