Wetland Mitigation

The issue of wetland mitigation is an extremely important one when building roads in Delaware. Throughout the construction of State Route 1, the Delaware Department of Transportation has had to "give back" for the land used in the building of that highway.

For every acre used in road construction, DelDOT must provide 2 acres of new wetlands. Those wetlands, up until now, have been designed as ponds (first image) or as in an entire area replanted with seedlings or saplings (second image).

However, now, the government requires a new style of wetland mitigation. Although it may look like a tree graveyard, it is actually a new wetland site. It is a more natural way of creating wetlands, similar to what happens after a natural forest fire. The stumps remain and the area is "reseeded" naturally by visiting birds and other wildlife.
