1. Pedestrian and bicycle facilities
in law, "provision of facilities for bicycles and pedestrians"

Examples.
New or reconstructed sidewalks, walkways, curb ramps; bike lane striping, wide paved shoulders, bike parking, and bus racks; off-road shared-use, non-motorized trails; bike and pedestrian bridges and underpasses.

2. Pedestrian and bicycle safety education
in law, "provision of safety and educational activities for bicycles and pedestrians"

Examples.
Programs designed to encourage walking and bicycling by providing potential users with education and safety instruction through classes, pamphlets and signage.

3. Acquisition of scenic or historic sites
in law, "acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites"

Examples.
Acquisition of scenic land easements, vistas and landscapes; purchase of buildings in historic districts or historic properties; preservation of farmland.

4. Scenic or historic highway programs
in law, "scenic or historic highway programs, including tourist and welcome center facilities"

Examples.
Construction of turnouts, overlooks, visitor centers, viewing areas, designation signs and markers.

5. Landscaping and scenic beautification
in law, "landscaping and scenic beautification"

Examples.
Improvements such as street furniture, lighting, public art; landscaping along streets, historic highways, trails, interstates, waterfronts and gateways.

6. Historic preservation
in law, "historic preservation"

Examples.
Preservation of buildings and facades in historic districts; restoration and reuse of historic buildings for transportation-related purposes; access improvements to historic sites and buildings.

7. Rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities
in law, "rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation buildings, structures or facilities"

Examples.
Restoration of railroad depots, bus stations and lighthouses; rehabilitation of rail trestles, tunnels and bridges.

8. Conversion of abandoned railway corridors to trails
in law, "preservation of abandoned rail corridors, including the conversion and use thereof for pedestrian and bicycle trails"

Examples.
Acquiring railroad rights-of-way; planning, designing and constructing multi-use trails; developing rail-with-trail projects; purchasing unused railroad property for the reuse.

9. Control and removal of outdoor advertising
in law, "control and removal of outdoor advertising"

Examples.
Billboard inventories or removal of illegal and nonconforming billboards.

10. Archaeological planning and research
in law, "archaeological planning and research"

Examples.
Research, preservation planning and interpretation; developing interpretive signs, exhibits and guides; inventories and surveys.

11. Environmental mitigation
in law, "environmental mitigation to address water pollution due to highway runoff or reduce vehicle-caused wildlife mortality while maintaining habitat connectivity"

Examples.
Runoff pollution studies, soil erosion controls, detention and sediment basins, river clean-ups and wildlife crossings.

12. Transportation museums
in law, "establishment of transportation museums"

Examples.
Construction of transportation museums, including the conversion of railroad stations or historic properties to museums with transportation themes and exhibits or the purchase of transportation-related artifacts.
