Fort Delaware, Pea Patch Island

At the time of its completion in 1859, Fort Delaware was the largest fortification in the United States. During the Civil War, the fort served as a prison for captured confederate soldiers. The State of Delaware acquired the fort in 1947 and in 1951 it became a state park. Today, the fort is open to the public where historical interpreters represent both union and confederate soldiers.
