Be ready to take a trip back in time and hold on to your hats for this tour. The city of Dover, Delaware is proud to boast that it is the home of the United State’s first state capital and a major modern-day sporting facility in America. Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution, and this historical moment was done in downtown Dover. Dover, Delaware is also the home of Dover Downs Speedway that hosts two NASCAR races a year. All of this is within a short hour commute from Wilmington, DE.
Our friends at Delaware State Parks have set up special tours for us in the state capital of Dover, DE. Dover is a quaint, small town in Kent County Delaware, and yes it was the first state capital in the United States. This day will start with a tour of Legislative Hall where all of the State’s legislators have offices, hold meetings, and ratify the state’s constitution. The Hall is a Georgian-style structure that has been the home of Delaware’s General Assembly since 1933.
The tour will then take you to one of the best archive exhibitions in the United States. Delaware’s Archive is home to material that dates back to the 17th century. You will get a special tour of the building, and its records as it takes you on a nostalgic trip back in time.
As if those two museums are not enough, we will be able to take you back to the year of 1787 when Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. This historical event took place in Dover, DE, and you get to take a walking tour of where the United States Constitution was actually signed. Yes, you will take a special guided walking tour of “The Green” by a guide that is dressed in the traditional garb of the 17th century.
The day does not end there. After touring the base you will be driven to the Dover Downs Racetrack, home of the “Monster Mile” that has been made famous by NASCAR. Twice a year thousands of spectators (more than 140,000 people) converge on Dover, Delaware to watch “The Monster Mile” NASCAR race. This event is televised all over the world. Very few people will ever set foot on this track, but you will be one of the lucky few.
Once you arrive at the racetrack, you will be escorted to a skybox over looking the mile long racetrack. This lunch will be catered by Dover Downs Hotel. After lunch you will be taken on a tour of the facility, and the track itself. You will be able to step out on the track, and actually feel how banked the turns really are. It will be an awesome sight.
