Perhaps the common ground for the Heritage Trail is the area's many bodies of fresh water. The area is rich with river communities, including Indian River at Millsboro, Broadkill River in Milton, Mispillion in Milford and the pristine Nanticoke River-a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay-which flows gracefully past the towns of Seaford, Laurel and Delmar. Many of these towns are well known for their shipbuilding or railroading history-important links to the waterways. There's also an abundance of freshwater lakes and ponds awaiting the angler or canoeing enthusiast.
