TRAFFIC ALERT - Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing Will be Closed on U.S. Route 40/Pulaski Highway for Repairs
Bear -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) in conjunction with Norfolk Southern Railroad will close the railroad crossing on U.S. Route 40 between Route 72 and Scotland Drive. The crossing will be closed on Friday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m. until Monday, August 26 at 5 a.m. During this closure, crews will be working around the clock.
U.S. Route 40 eastbound: Turn right onto Route 72, left onto Porter Road and return to U.S. Route 40.
U.S. Route 40 westbound: Turn right onto Salem Church Road, left onto Old Baltimore Pike, left onto Route 72 and back to U.S. Route 40.
U.S. Route 40 eastbound: At the intersection with Route 896, traffic will be directed to Route 896 northbound, then to I-95 northbound to Route 273 eastbound, then to Route 1 southbound and back to U. S. Route 40.
U.S. Route 40 westbound: Traffic will be directed onto Route 1 northbound, to Route 273 westbound to I-95 southbound, to Route 896 southbound and return to U.S. Route 40.
Message boards will be in place throughout the region to divert motorists away from the U.S. Route 40 railroad crossings to minimize traffic impacts along the local detour route. All work is dependent on weather conditions and other factors. All businesses in the vicinity of the railroad crossing will be open during this time period.
To access businesses in the area of the rail crossing:
Businesses on the west side of the crossing: Traffic coming from the east trying to access businesses on the west side of the crossing should utilize the eastbound detour which is to turn right onto Salem Church Road, left onto Old Baltimore Pike, left onto Route 72 then right onto U.S. Route 40 eastbound. Coming from the west, motorists can access businesses as they normally would.
Businesses on the east side of the crossing: Traffic coming from the west trying to access businesses on the east side of the crossing should utilize the westbound detour which is to turn right onto Route 72, left onto Porter Road then left onto westbound U.S. Route 40. Coming from the east, motorists can access businesses as they normally would.
A temporary crossover prior to the railroad crossing will allow access to businesses west through the Scotland Drive intersection.
Pedestrian access will not be available during the road closure. DART will be transporting pedestrians around the closure on the regularly scheduled Bus Routes 40, 41 & 64 free of charge, as well as a special Shuttle on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
DART Temporary Bus Stop Closures:
Bus Routes 40, 41 & 64 - Four bus stops on U.S. Route 40 between Fox Run Shopping Center and Scotland Drive will not be served during this detour.
On the east side of railroad track closure, passengers/pedestrians wanting to go westbound can board the DART Routes/Shuttle at temporary bus stops at U.S. Route 40 and Scotland Drive. For passengers on the west side of the track closure traveling eastbound, board at U.S. Route 40 and Wrangle Hill Road. Notices will be posted at the affected bus stops.
