Digging back through time near Frederica will tell us more about the people who used to live there.
Previous archaeological surveys indicate a large Native American population existed in the area to be affected by road construction. These ancestors were the people who met European settlers in the early 1700's. (Click on the brochure image below to read more.)
DelDOT Archaeologist David Clarke, in a recent media interview, stated "So far we have a lot of Native American stone tools and we also have Native American pottery. We also have some historic artifacts from the mid to late 19th century and we're probably going to find some evidence of hearth features and pit features." Back when Frederica was named Johnny Cake Landing ca. 18th & 19th century, the area currently being investigated also had docks and structures adjacent to the Murderkill River, all associated with the ship building and shipping trades. Archaeologists are also finding evidence of these past lifeways. If you are in the area, please stop in and see what is being discovered!
